For the past few years, Think Big has been exploring the stories that can help us imagine and build a future where belonging is something we create together and power is genuinely shared. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the question of who gets to shape America’s story feels more urgent than ever.

The tools below are designed to offer inspiration, guidance, and practical support to craft authentic, inclusive American stories and use the US@250 moment to help move our nation closer to its promise.

Step 1: Learn more

  • This work grew out of a year-long effort that brought together narrative strategists, researchers, and funders — with guidance from leading thinkers and changemakers — to identify a narrative frame that meets this moment. Learn more about our why.

Step 2: Get inspired

  • Explore our living Gallery of Creativity, which illustrates the narrative frame through stories in history, photography, poetry, visual art, and more.
  • Join us on Instagram. In the Hands of the People is an account created and maintained by Think Big to highlight both the expressions and the spirit of the core idea – In America, the people are supposed to be in charge. Help us spread the word by liking, commenting on, and sharing.

Step 3: Add your voice

From artists, musicians, and social justice communicators to a community art and skating event (!), a growing chorus of voices is lifting up an inclusive, authentic story of what it means to be American right now. Add your voice!
